Formed in 1965, Solihull and District Orchid society is a member of the British Orchid Council.

The intention of this society is to promote the cultivation and preservation of all orchid species and hybrids.

At most meetings we have either professional or amateur growers giving talks, slide shows and advice on orchid culture. A members' show table is also well supported each month, with marks given for the way a plant has been grown and flowered. We are fortunate to have 3 qualified judges on our committee whose expertise and advice is always welcome. We also have one trainee judge. Society members range from the experienced growers to novices with only one or two plants on the windowsill.

The society holds two shows a year. One is in April, when other societies, trade exhibitors and professional growers gather together to make a fine show of many rare and exotic flowers. The second, our Christmas show, is only for members, but it is amazing how many vibrant, colourful orchids flower at this time of year. The society also exhibits at other orchid and flower shows in the Midlands region.

An annual day trip by coach is organised by the society, usually to one of the professional growers' greenhouses, where plants may be purchased in their growing environment. There is always a good show of blooms.

The society also has a library with a good selection of books and magazines which are available to be borrowed by members at the monthly meetings.

A membership card is provided on joining, with the programme for the year. We also have our own society badge.  Current membership is £10 per year single.
